Tamil Nadu

The State of Tamil Nadu

Geographic data on the State of Tamil Nadu:
Surface: 130 058 km2
Population: 55.8 million inhabitants
Capital City: Chennai (Madras)
Literacy rate: 62.66% (male: 63.78%; female: 44.60%)
Annual rainfall: 1133.8 mm

The Tamil Nadu state is probably the most typical Hindu one because, unlike northern India, the South came less under the Muslim influence of the Mughals.

The Tamil Nadu population remains predominantly rural and the industry is underdeveloped.

88% of the Tamils are Hindu, 6% Christians and 6% Muslims.

The caste system in Tamil Nadu

The caste system is well established in Tamil Nadu and the traditional distinctions are more visible here than in many other parts of India. Dalits (that is to say Untouchables or outcastes) are 11 million in Tamil Nadu, which represent 20% of the population of the region. 72% of the Dalits are agricultural workers, only 7% owning their own land.

Water in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu is facing a severe paucity of water. Even when available, water is often of poor quality. Presently, approximately 550kms to 650kms of water are taken from the environment each year, of which 90% is used for the irrigation. Surface water is not sufficient, especially during the dry season when 50% of the water used for irrigation comes from the groundwater.

In the countryside, the villages are segregated in untouchable areas, non-untouchable areas and / or mixed areas. Often, due to low coverage, access to water is rationed and even more for the outcast populations. Moreover, the water is rarely drinkable. Insufficient water and poor water quality cause health problems: infectious, parasitic or diarrheal diseases.
